UNIT 5 QUALITY AND STANDARDS

DESIGNING A COURSE PAGE FOR MOODLE

UNIT 5 QUALITY AND STANDARDS

1.1.       Describe two quality models.

ADDIE MODEL is an Instructional System Design which consist of five phases. They are as follows analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. Main purpose of ADDIE is to provide guideline for effective training and performance support tools.

ADDIE theories also contribute to behaviourism, constructivism, social learning and cognitivism theories.

ADDIE include rapid prototyping models based on the Dick & Carey and Kemp ISD theory and is about reviewing feedback while creating instructional materials. There is also idea of rapid prototyping SAM successive approximation model.

Let’s discuss now ADDIE Model types

ADDIE MODEL

                                                                      Evaluation

Analysis

                                Development                       Implementation

Design

Analysis instructional problem is explained, goals are set, and learner’s knowledge and skills are checked.

Design is about learning objectives, lesson planning, content, media selection, content, exercises, subject matter analysis.

Development    is about developing content and technologies. Programmers assess and revise any feedback.

Implementation     Workers want to train facilitators and the learning is developed.  Facilitators learn about testing procedures, learning outcomes and course plans, software and registration.

Evaluation   is formative and summative.  Formative is always present at ADDIE.  Summative has tests which check domain specific criterion items and involve feedback.

FLIPPED CLASSROOM ON MOODLE

Flipped classroom

Teacher records lessons outside of the classroom and sends teaching materials to students outside of the classroom.  Students watch videos at home online. Learners also make a research online, join their discussions through online forums or chats at home and do their homework and learn topics at home online. This is quite opposite to traditional classroom and is a type of blended learning.

Let me show you few good practices for flipped classrooms in Further Education Environment.  In Barnsley College we use Moodle

In Barnsley College we use Moodle where students can access at home various materials and resources for their course. If they do any course they want they can access their materials at home through Moodle. They can also collaborate together through online chats, forums and discussions. Teachers can also set up their quizzes or assignments. They can collaborate through creating wikis, build their own Wikipedia, submit their work through group assignments or get feedback.

Let me show you benefits of two flipped classrooms models and what they can offer in terms of benefits to a course.

There are lots and absolutely lots of benefits for flipped classroom. Perfect example here is Moodle. In Barnsley College we use Moodle where you can access your courses online at home outside the classroom.  I listed few benefits of using Moodle flipped classroom model

Easy to communicate Students communicate with peers and tutors through chats and forums.

Easy to collaborate Learners create their Wikipedia these are group submissions where you submit work through assignment submission tool.

Easy to interact Learners take part in quizzes or games.

Quick to use the course pages are used to share videos or files

Easy to evaluate Tutor sends you videos or material to watch for your course, and then you submit your work to tutor and receive feedback.

1.2.       Explain how one model has been applied in an

E-Learning context.

I would like to tell you how flipped classroom model has been applied in an E-Learning content.  Students can do quizzes or interactive projects on Moodle through ELearning packages we create at Elephants Learning Designs.  Teachers send students materials or quizzes they need to complete on Moodle and learners complete them at home.  E-Learning Packages can be used as online lessons with a series of content displaying on several pages. These can include a range of games and quizzes.  Students can submit their work to tutor and receive feedback on Moodle. There are two types of assignments Trunitin and Assignment. Flipped classroom works that way that tutor send students E-Learning content. Learners do their interactive E-Learning content at home and they send later work to teacher. Tutor mark their work and send it back to them. Flipped classroom this means that learners study outside classroom. This is quite reversed to traditional classroom. In that way students are prepared for their lectures before they come to classroom.  Flipped classroom encourages learners to higher-order thinking tasks.  You can clearly see that flipped classroom model has been applied to E-Learning packages because learners study outside classroom and develop better and quicker understanding of their topic and their pass mark can be higher if they are prepared at home.

I wanted to give you an example of my ELearning package. I created interactive quiz of Health and Safety where students were required to answer multiple choice questions. If they answered question correctly they were able to move to next question. If they answered question incorrectly they had to take quiz again. This is a perfect example of flipped classroom that has been applied in a E-Learning context. Teacher uploaded on Moodle my Health and Safety quiz I created. Students access their Health and Safety quiz outside classroom at home and take interactive quiz at home on Moodle. Later learner send completed quiz on Moodle to tutor through Trunitin.  They receive feedback about their Assignment on Moodle.

Here I included screenshots of Health and Safety project.

3.1. Describe a range of accessibility issues that should be considered when creating digital learning resources.

I think it is very important to make sure that E-Learning packages are accessible to everybody regardless of their gender, background, ethnicity, culture or disability. I would say that disabled students would be here the priority.  We create here at Elephants Learning Designs E-Learning packages for students and learners at College. I would like to mention that partially blind students will struggle with some of the

E-Learning packages that is why I would say that subtitles and large images would be beneficial for them. I would recommend to use large fonts and images for deaf students. Furthermore, I would say that students from different countries could find it useful to have access to google translator widget embedded into E-Learning packages.

I would recommend to make sure that E-Learning packages are interactive and animated so in that way students can learn quicker and find it more interesting through various quizzes and games and interactive scenarios.

As mentioned above, disability will prevent students from accessing digital learning resources. If we make it accessible for them, then they will very easily complete quizzes or games and will be treated equally and graduate the same as other students.

I also have an idea of adding videos and talking characters to the E-Learning packages so in that way students will find it very easy to access especially disabled learners.

4.1. Explain the importance of technical and protocols within E-Learning.

Technical aspects and protocols help to develop E-Learning and online learning courses and programmes. Teachers learn how to transform teaching practice into E-Learning and online learning opportunities.  They can also understand better E-Learning, analyse pedagogy and evaluate deployment and use of E-Learning. Teachers can develop their skills in E-Learning, active learning, assessing online, alternative platforms, blended learning, collaborative learning and experiential learning.

As you can see in general, I would recommend for teachers to use Moodle more.  There are lots of benefits of using Moodle but not many teachers and students use it. They can collaborate through chats and forums or create Wikipedia group work. Teachers can give students feedback on Moodle and students can submit their course work through Trunitin and Assignments.  E-Learning packages can be used with a series of lessons like online quizzes or games. Sadly not many teachers and students use it. Teachers can develop their skills and broaden their knowledge thanks to E-Learning. I think it would be beneficial for teachers to observe students’ various learning styles and adopt new teaching techniques and develop their teaching practice.
