 STORYBOARDING

 

1.   This is demonstrating background knowledge of storyboarding, so:

a.    Identify, explore and evaluate a range of planning and storyboarding tools (minimum 6 including a traditional method - handwritten) *Please don’t forget to evaluate each one – Strengths and weaknesses

I used six tools to create Health and Safety quiz. I was using PowerPoint, handwritten method,  Storyboardthat,  Prezi, Flockdraw, Celtx. I planned it by sketching and drawing and writing text. The purpose of this presentation was to teach learners about Health and Safety regulations. I planned and sketched storyboard template in order to create Health and Safety multiple questions quiz. In this blog I will show you advantages and disadvantages of each tool and we will discuss it. I also included screenshots of my storyboarding plan.

POWERPOINT

ADVANTAGES 


PowerPoint is quick and easy to use.  PowerPoint is very powerful tool for visual aids. I created Health and Safety storyboard template, where I sketched plan for Health and Safety quiz and I drew few sketches of office, kitchen, hairdressers, garage, factory and the shop. I sketched how I will plan to create Health and Safety quiz and layout for the storyboard quiz. 

Another advantage of using PowerPoint is that PowerPoint is easy to create colourful design and easy to modify. When I created my PowerPoint Health and Safety storyboard template, I made changes to the layout of my presentation. I moved page title, image and title to different location.

In PowerPoint it is easy to input images, add note pages, master slides make presentations consistent and it is more exciting than word document and hand written presentation. I found it easy to add written text to PowerPoint and slides helped me to plan how I designed my Health and Safety quiz. PowerPoint slides helped me to plan how to insert multiple questions and how to organise the entire quiz.

    DISADVANTAGES    

     One of the disadvantages of using PowerPoint is that some of its features can be quite complicated to use. At first, I found it difficult to draw in the PowerPoint and I struggled to get used to it. I had to use it few times to learn how to sketch.

Another disadvantage is that PowerPoint that it can be distracting. When I planned my Health and Safety storyboard, I felt distracted by fonts and slide shows.

It takes a bit of time to create a complete presentation. It took me over few days to sketch image, title and images. 

It can be difficult to find some features in PowerPoint. I struggled to find a pen to sketch my drawings and it took me a long time to find it.

 

EVALUATE TECHNOLOGY

 As you can see using PowerPoint has got many advantages and disadvantages. I prefer to use PowerPoint for my presentations and creating storyboard plan. Overall, it has more advantages than disadvantages. Just to summarise, PowerPoint is simple, quick and easy to use and I would recommend it to use in creating storyboard plans.  Some features may be complex to use in PowerPoint but once you get used to them it will be easy.

 

HANDWRITTEN

Let me show you another tool, which I used to plan my storyboard handwritten method.  I wrote on a piece of paper how to create and plan my Health and Safety storyboard.

ADVANTAGES

It is quick and easy to use. I drew quickly plan how to plan Health and Safety Quiz.

It is less time consuming. It allows you to quickly write main points for your storyboard plan.

Thanks to handwritten method, you can easily plan ahead your step by step stages and you have more time to rethink your ideas.

DISADVANTAGES

Handwritten form of planning your storyboard can be not interactive and it can be boring for some users.

Handwritten planning may be risky due to losing its content. If you lose papers you will not have it any more.

Handwritten method is less effective for people with IT skills as they may prefer to use computer.

You may struggle to read your own handwriting if you do not write neatly.

EVALUATE TECHNOLOGY

I would say that handwritten method is also very effective tool for creating storyboard. Handwritten method is easy and quick to use and less time consuming and easy to create your plan for storyboard. On the other hand, handwritten method is not interactive and not suitable for everybody. You may risk to lose your handwritten notes.

I used storyboardthat to plan my Health and Safety quiz. I sketched mind map to help me to plan ahead my step by step actions to create Health and Safety storyboard.

 

 

ADVANTAGES

You have hundreds of default images. You can select any image you want and there is a wide variety. You can search with over 45,000 images.

You can have classic layout.

 

Storyboardthat has flexible layouts. You can choose Classic, T-Charts, Grids, Frayer Models, Spider Maps & Timelines. You can also type title and description.

It is simple to use.  It is very simple to upload images, add cells and write texts and choose different formats.

Storyboardthat is presentation ready. You can turn your storyboard into presentation. You can create live click slide shows, export to PowerPoint your files, create cells.

You can also upload storyboardthat template on your computer or tablet.

 

DISADVANTAGES

Storyboardthat is a free and paid storyboard tool. In free account you can create only two storyboards per week.  You have to pay

$ 9.95 per month to create multiple storyboards with privacy.

In free account you cannot upload your own images, have advanced layouts, have privacy and security settings, record audio, write private story comments, have access to administrative tools, reporting, teacher view, corporate sharing, commercial use.

If you want to have access to these features, you have to pay $ 9.95 per month.

Storyboard is difficult sometimes to navigate and when you make changes to storyboard, you have to create a new one each time.

EVALUATE TECHNOLOGY

To sum up, storyboardthat has hundreds of images to use, different layouts, formats and presentations. On the other hand, you have limited access to features on free account and if you want to use more advanced features you have to pay.

CELTX

With Celtx you can write, breakdown storyboard and budget your productions. This is a free and paid scriptwriting storyboard tool.  

ADVANTAGES

Celtx has many advantages. You can use scriptwriting, snippets, fdx import. You can write your scripts anytime and anywhere. You can use  standard script editing with integrated media and mobile functionality. You can also import your existing scripts in fdx import.

There is also an online help support centre so if you are not sure about anything you can just email support centre.

Celtx is very practical and useful tool for creating storyboard plan.  You can write your story with index cards and share scripts.  You can also add images and notes to it.

You can shoot and call and create the shots and revise script changes.

Celtx allows you to plan your events, locations and built up comprehensive list.

DISADVANTAGES

Big disadvantage of Celtx is that it has free and paid account.

You cannot do script revision tracking, index cards, breakdown, scheduling, budgeting, cost reports, production management in your free account. You have to pay $ 8.25 per month for these features.

You cannot have access to priority email support, use celtx on your mobile apps, use client approval system, group management, episodic scriptwriting, episodic production management, private URL sharing, two step security log in.  You have to pay $ 16.58 per month for these features.

You may find it difficult sometimes to navigate around the system so it is good to try it few times before you get used to it.

EVALUATE TECHNOLOGY

To sum up, celtx is used for scriptwriting, snippets, fdx import and allows you to plan your events and location, call and create shots and write your scripts anytime, anywhere. On the other hand, it is limited for its features for free users. If you would like to use more features, you will have to pay. 

FLOCKDRAW

FLOCKDRAW I used Flockdraw to draw map about how I will plan my storyboard for Health and Safety.

I used diagram in FlockDraw to plan my Health and Safety presentation.  As you can see I was planning to include in the presentation questions, answers, images and images.

ADVANTAGES

Flockdraw is an excellent tool to draw and plan your storyboard. I drew there map plan where I entered that I need to work on finding images, animations, questions and answers.

Flockdraw is an easy to use whiteboard and is quick to use. I managed to draw quick plan within few minutes.

DISADVANTAGES

Flockdraw does not have more advanced tools in creating storyboard. It is just a simple drawing tool.

Some users may find it too easy to use and they may not be able to insert more advanced animations or graphics.

Flockdraw is not designed for text use.

EVALUATE TECHNOLOGY

Flockdraw allows you to draw and plan your storyboard and sketch quick plan ahead for your storyboard and it is very quick and easy to use. On the other hand, flockdraw is not designed for text use and lacks some more advanced features.

PREZI

Next tool I was using is called Prezi. This helped me to plan my Health and Safety storyboard.

I used Prezi to schedule my Health and Safety storyboard and I included what steps I will be taking in planning storyboard: organise images, select your animations, organise questions, find answers and discuss your work with co-ordinator. I also included images I will be using for Health and Safety.

ADVANTAGES

Undoubtedly, prezi is a highly precise map planning tool, which helps you to create plan map for your project. I created five stages of my Health and Safety tool and broke it down into five stages organise images, select your animations, organise your questions, find answers and discuss your work with co-ordinator.

Prezi is very quick tool for planning your project. I created within ten minutes and my Health and Safety map with very presentable images.

DISADVANTAGES

Prezi can be limited with its features as it only allows you to create short map plan. If you wanted a longer plan, it may be not the best tool for you. I created very short map for Health and Safety quiz.

Prezi is a web based tool. If you have limited web access or if your internet connection is not reliable then probably hand written planning method will be better for you.

EVALUATE TECHNOLOGY

Prezi allows you to create mind map for your storyboard plan and is very quick and easy to use. On the other hand, prezi is limited with its feature and may seem too simple to use if you need longer and more advanced mind map plan for your storyboard.

1.1. b  Explain the importance of planning before developing the storyboard.

It is very important to plan before you develop the storyboard because this ensures that you are prepared for presentation and you will organise it smoothly and you will complete your storyboard successfully with minimised amount of mistakes. If you do not plan then more likely your storyboard quality work will be poor and your presentation may not make much sense.

EFFICIENT USE OF RESOURCES

Thanks to planning your storyboard, you will become more efficient in your work. Your productivity will increase and your resources will not be wasted with small chance of success. When you create your storyboard, you have to achieve its goal and complete deadline for creating your storyboard. Thanks to planning you will be able to meet your deadline for your storyboard and your quality of work will be better. You need to think what resources you need to use, what images to use, what animations to use, what text to write and what ideas to implement. You also need to make effective decisions in order to meet your target and become successful. In my Health and Safety storyboard, I made plan what planning tools I will be using. As mentioned above, I created a plan for storyboard and I used Prezi, PowerPoint, handwritten plan, Tumblr, Asana and FlockDraw to create Health and Safety storyboard. I also used Moodle and Internet Resources to make efficient research. I met deadline 22.12.2015 to meet the deadline for the project. I draw and sketched plan on Prezi, which really helped me to efficiently present multiple choice Health and Safety quiz. I stored my images on Tumblr, which later I used it for Health and Safety quiz and I had everything ready and well planned. If I did not have the resources ready, then  I could have missed the deadline and my presentation would not be very effective.


 

ESTABLISHING GOALS

Setting goals for your storyboarding is very important because you perform better. If you plan ahead for your storyboarding, then you will complete it on time and meet the required deadline. Let's think before we develop storyboard what steps we need to complete, what ideas we need and most importantly let's define the aims for planning. It is useful to think about time scale, write down aims, identify what goals we need to achieve, write down steps we need to achieve. Achieving goals is a crucial aspect of planning and without it we would not prepare properly storyboard, we would miss the deadline or even worse we would fail entire project. Setting goals is also crucial for higher motivation. If we did not set goals, then our motivation would be low and less productive. In my story boarding I used following steps to achieve my goals. I structured my goals and listed my goals. I also thought about my priorities. This is how I wrote it down organise your images, select your animations, organise your questions, find your answers, discuss your work with your co-ordinator using Prezi I also wrote down using Asana important meeting dates and plan actions.

MANAGING RISK AND UNCERTANITY

Managing risk is essential for storyboarding planning. Thanks to planning for your storyboard, you reduce the risk of failure for your storyboarding, not achieving your goals or producing very poor quality of work. Without planning for your storyboarding, there is a risk that you may not complete your work or produce very poor results or even worse forget about your project altogether. Planning encourages what if scenarios where you can think what would happen if you did not plan. If I did not plan my storyboard, then tutors would not have received my Health and Safety quiz, which was very important and compulsory for learners to complete it. Let's think further. If College as organisation, did not introduce Health and Safety quiz which is compulsory, college would have to face legal consequences. Introducing Health and Safety Regulations is a legal requirement and if it is not introduced then companies may face fines and further court proceedings. As you can see also members of staff who do not comply with company requirements may face dismissal. As you can see without planning, consequences can be disastrous.

TEAM BUILDING

Co-working is an essential way of planning your storyboard. You may have to complete storyboard in team with another colleague where you share your amount of work. Here you have to discuss and agree with your colleague on template you will be using and also on images you will be using and share work between you. Like I agreed with Nathan that he was responsible for doing information pages and I was responsible for doing multiple choice questions for Health and Safety Project.

You also have to discuss with your project co-ordinator what images they prefer for you to use, what questions and answers they would prefer and what design they would like you to use. Again like Brad project co-coordinator discussed with me design for Health and Safety, multiple questions type and also template design.

Imagine if you did not discuss with your co-ordinator and your colleague what work you need to do, you would not know what to do. You would not have the materials you need to use, templates you need to use and all necessary questions and answer. You would miss your deadline and even worse you would not be able to do project at all as you would not have the required materials. If you were not able to communicate with your team, you would not complete the project.

CREATING COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

Planning helps to review your strengths and weaknesses and evaluate yourself with others. Observing your competitors' actions may help to identify the ideas, which were missed. When you plan your storyboard, you become more competitive in the group and more likely able to pass your coursework. It is very good to analyse your competitors' work where you can see how they planned their work and if they had good ideas implement some of them to your own work. Believe it or not you become more competitive when you plan. When I planned my Health and Safety storyboard quiz,

I was able to identify my strong and weak points. I decided what I needed to do and how to implement these changes into my storyboard. I remember I had bad ideas about some images and animations and I also did not have very good ideas about some of the questions. Thanks to planning for my storyboard, I select relevant images to my Health and Safety. I also created correct multiple questions for my Health and Safety and correct answers. Storyboarding made me more competitive and I also observed how other colleagues planned their storyboards and what tools they used and I even used some of the tools they used like Prezi. I became more competitive and introduced some ideas that they did not use. If I did not use planning, I would not be competitive, my storyboard would not be interesting and possible I would miss my deadline. There could be further consequences as discussed earlier of company not meeting their legal obligations towards their employees.
